Is it a new and trendy gimmick?
The Chinese have known for thousands of years that the root of health and beauty comes from the inside. Chinese nobility used acupuncture for centuries as a successful anti-ageing and health treatment. Over the past decades people all over the world have been enjoying the genuine benefits of this facial rejuvenation treatment as well.
These benefits were documented in a 1996 study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture. This study reported that among 300 cases treated with cosmetic acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one complete course of treatment.
The effects included:
- levelling of wrinkles,
- improvement of skin elasticity and facial muscle tone,
- a healthier complexion and overall rejuvenation – not confined to the face.
Each Facial Rejuvenation acupuncture treatment is individualised according to how each person is aging. No two people receive the same treatments because each person's aging process is unique. Acupuncture points are chosen based on an individualised diagnosis according to the principles of Chinese medicine. A diagnosis is reached by examining constitutional health issues and any symptoms you may be having. Thus, the treatment is an overall rejuvenation of your health as well as your appearance.
Throughout treatment, other physical symptoms you may be experiencing will also improve.
Treatments can improve:
- hormonal balance,
- you may have better quality of sleep and increased energy,
- it will improve your digestion and metabolism and strengthen your immune system and
- you can also address and treat any chronic or recurring pain.
Are there any contraindications?
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is not usually suitable for people who have:
- pituitary disorders,
- some heart disorders and
- Diabetes mellitus.
It is not suitable for individuals who have:
- a pacemaker,
- who suffer from excessive bruising or bleeding.
It is also not recommended for people with:
- a lot of broken capillaries on the face;
- during pregnancy,
- a bout with a cold or flu,
- an allergic attack or
- an acute herpes outbreak.
What is the procedure?
Each treatment involves the insertion of tiny acupuncture needles into specific areas of the face, ears, neck, hands, feet, legs and arms to affect changes in the face as well as the whole body. On your first visit, Karen will discuss your overall health history. Karen will then evaluate what changes you would like to see in your face and skin and then you receive an acupuncture treatment.
The needles are inserted while you are relaxing and lying down. When the needles are in, you rest for 30-40 minutes; once the needles are removed Karen will perform a facial massage. In general, the treatments are very relaxing and take about 90 minutes for the initial treatment and 60 minutes for follow ups.
Treatment Plan
The full course of facial rejuvenation consists of 12 to 15 facial rejuvenation acupuncture sessions. Treatments are administered once or twice weekly.
Results may be seen as early as the first treatment, but typically it is around the seventh visit that results are even more marked with changes in wrinkles, skin tone, etc. The impression of wellbeing and calm is more pronounced; you will appear as if you have just returned from holidays. Lifting of the jowls, neck and the eyes has already begun and is usually noticeable.
By the end of a series, you should look and feel 5-15 years younger. These results may vary slightly, depending upon how well you have taken care of yourself during the treatments and afterwards.
At this stage, monthly maintenance treatments will help you to sustain the effects of the initial series. Depending on your condition, your treatment plan might also include herbal remedies and lifestyle advice.
Can Any Acupuncturist Administer Facial Rejuvenation?
No, Constitutional Facial Rejuvenation is a specialised field of training, requiring post-graduate study for the acupuncturist. I was trained and certified by world-renowned teacher, lecturer and constitutional facial rejuvenation acupuncture practitioner Mary-Elizabeth Wakefield who developed the constitutional facial rejuvenation acupuncture techniques I use.
